End of Summer Tips for Your Pool

As summer begins to fade and cooler days approach, it’s time to start thinking about closing your pool for the season. Properly preparing your pool now can save you time, money, and headaches when it's time to reopen next year. Here are five essential tips to help you prepare your pool for the end of summer:

1. Clean Thoroughly: The first step in preparing your pool for closure is to give it a thorough cleaning. Skim the surface to remove any debris like leaves and bugs, vacuum the pool floor, and brush the walls and tiles. Pay special attention to any algae or grime that might have built up over the summer. A clean pool prevents debris from staining the surface and reduces the risk of algae growth over the winter months.

2. Balance the Water Chemistry: Before closing your pool, it's crucial to balance the water chemistry. Test the water's pH, alkalinity, and calcium hardness, and adjust them as needed. Aim for a pH level between 7.4 and 7.6, alkalinity between 100 and 150 parts per million (ppm), and calcium hardness between 200 and 400 ppm. Balancing the water helps protect your pool’s surface and equipment from corrosion and scale buildup during the off-season.

3. Shock and Chlorinate: Once the water is balanced, the next step is to shock the pool with a high dose of chlorine. Shocking the pool kills any lingering bacteria and algae and keeps the water clean while it’s not in use. After shocking, allow the chlorine levels to drop to a normal range (1-3 ppm) before covering the pool. You may also want to add an algaecide as an extra layer of protection against algae growth.

4. Lower the Water Level: Lowering the water level is essential to prevent freezing and potential damage to the pool and its plumbing. Typically, you should drain the pool water to about 4-6 inches below the skimmer or tile line. This gives room for water expansion if it freezes, reducing the risk of cracking and other damage. Be sure to consult your pool manufacturer’s guidelines to determine the appropriate water level for your specific pool type.

5. Cover Your Pool: Finally, invest in a high-quality pool cover to protect your pool over the winter. A good cover keeps out debris, blocks sunlight (which can promote algae growth), and prevents water evaporation. Make sure the cover fits snugly and is securely fastened to prevent it from blowing off during strong winds. You might also consider using a pool pillow or air pillow under the cover to help prevent ice formation on the pool surface.

By following these five tips, you’ll ensure that your pool is properly winterized and ready for a smooth opening next summer. Taking the time to close your pool correctly not only extends its lifespan but also saves you from potential costly repairs down the line. Enjoy the rest of the season and look forward to a hassle-free pool opening next year!
